Expressions
Expressions is a meditation on Afrocentric femininity—abstracted, layered, and alive with color. The work is built from domestic and exotic woods, each chosen for its natural vibrancy and historical weight. Iroko, African padauk, and curly maple rise as her crown; stained poplar shapes her afro and earrings; at the center, her face emerges from a shifting spectrum of padauk, iroko, curly maple, aromatic cedar, and canary, framed in deep red padauk.
This piece resists definition. It embodies the complexity of emotion: HAPPINESS, ANGRY, SURPRISED, BOREDOM. All present, all possible. Expressions does not tell you what to feel; it demands that you feel something.
